Simple pleasures

One of the best things about childhood is watching your child enjoy something for the first time, stirring up memories of your own childhood. This weekend was no exception:

Aren't spray bottles awesome??!

Or the secret thrill of being someplace you don't really belong...

And the company of sweet friends who enjoy your company no matter what new torture you've come up with:

Most all (for me at least), it's the notion that there is no such thing as incongruity when you're playing:

Of course rubber princess duckies and wooden black cats play together

Empress Louisa

Fun with Facebook:

Now's the time for Lulu to make her move! Empress Louisa Marie-Josephine has a nice ring to it....

New Sunglasses

We bought someone some new sunglasses in anticipation of our upcoming trip. She complains that she's "heiss" if the sun is shining in her eyes and she refuses to wear the really nice ones we bought her in Switzerland last year (go figure!). The Dora ones that initially grabbed her attention were really over the top and garish. I was impressed by the relative understatedness of the Hello Kitty and Barbie (imagine!) sunglasses and Lulu was won over to Hello Kitty by the "lila punkte" (purple polka dots).

Without further ado, here is Lulu modeling her new sunglasses during her nap in the car on the way home from lunch with Tante Hellen and Onkel Derek:

Should go nicely with her new hat to help protect her eyes from the sun in the desert Southwest. Will have to post comparison pictures to the hat/sunglasses look from this trip.

Need a hat?

After making Lulu a hat last year (or year before, I lose count) that instantaneously didn't fit her gi-normous head, I decided to use our scanner to enlarge the pattern piece, in the hopes that it would be big enough.  Plus, I had an old (as in pre-dating my marriage) fitted sheet that was ripped/worn thin in a couple of places.  So, I used some of my old fabric scraps from my pajama bottoms and the old sheet to make a cute hat.

And after a couple of hours (and one trip to the store to buy interfacing), we have a new hat that actually fits Lulu's head!

I didn't bother with the little tab piece at the top of the original pattern design.  And I had to improvise the interfacing around the edge so the hat would keep its shape (otherwise Walter said I should just cut out two eye-holes and she could be that guy from the Fat Albert cartoons).  I think it looks nice for a little girl who's almost 3.

Best of all, it fits all three of us, so if you need a hat, just send me a little fabric, and you, too, can have a nice hat for those sunny days!

Pizza, Dancing Bunnies, Magnets

Random collection of videos that I've shot recently and finally uploaded to YouTube for your enjoyment!

Lulu enjoying some cherry vanilla ice cream after we ate pizza at Masullo's:

She brought her present from the Easter Bunny into our bedroom earlier this week for an impromptu dance recital. Dido wasn't impressed:

And in the last one, she's playing by herself with a set of magnetic building toys on a huge metal baking pan (that won't fit in our oven!):
